He has been a regular in the comedy industry since the early 1990s but he was not aware that he had a son at that stage in his career. In an unusual twist, his ex-partner, Brenda, was also not aware that Brandon was Rickey Smiley’s child.
Rickey said; “We were all young, college, high school. The relationship ends, and she gets with somebody else thinking that the baby was his. It ended up being mine after six years of speculation. The DNA test came back as mine and then I raised him.”
Smiley further claimed that the man who mistook Brandon Smiley for his son raised him for the first six years as his own. He described that man as a “great guy” and he later married Brenda Smiley, Brandon Smiley’s mother.

What Happened To Rickey Smiley’s Son?
On January 29, 2023, Smiley revealed through his Instagram account that his son had lost his life. He said “I lost my oldest son Brandon Smiley this morning. I’m okay, but please pray for my son’s mother Brenda, his siblings, and his daughter Storm.”
Rickey stated that he is “praying his way through” and relying on his spirituality in the wake of his son’s sudden death. A toxicology report was not yet given to the family and an official cause of death was not yet confirmed at that time.
According to Rickey, his son had a history of drug use. In the wake of Brandon’s death, he stated that he wants to talk freely about the problems associated with drug addiction in the US.
The comedian said that he doesn’t “know why” or “know-how” how his son, Brandon, came to struggle with drug addiction, but said that both he and Brenda, Brandon’s mother, “are all clean and sober.”

What Happened To Rickey Smiley’s Daughter?
Rickey’s daughter Aaryn was caught in an unfortunate act of gun violence in Houston, Texas, in July 2020. She and her boyfriend were on their way to a restaurant when the gunman started shooting.
Aaryn shared the following on social media after the incident:
“The fact that the bullets that passed through my legs were armored rifle bullets designed to pass through anything (how they passed through the car), but the one that would have struck me in the head was not of that type and it was trapped in the vehicle. Words cannot express my gratitude for my current state of being.”
