When Fryer was 10 years old, her family relocated from St. Louis to the county capital of Lavaca County, Hallettsville.
By the time she was in high school, she had become a cheerleader, a Future Farmers of America sweetheart, the yearbook editor, and the valedictorian, in no specific order.
She had planned to pursue a career in journalism because her teachers had proposed it to her, but she changed her mind after the local Rotary Club sent her to Japan as a summer exchange student.
The young girl, who had only traveled once in a plane, found herself in Tokyo and became drawn to the country’s fascination with technology.
She made the decision to major in computer science as soon as she returned back home to start her studies at the University of Texas.
Even though there weren’t many women reporting on TV in 1972, her brother John advised her to quit studying computers and instead focus on broadcast journalism. Fryer enrolled in a TV broadcasting course that fall and by the end of the 1974 summer, Fryer had a new degree.

Shara married her high school sweetheart, Barry Silverman in the summer of 1974. Barry is an advertising and marketing executive with whom she kept crossing paths.
Though her career path was growing quickly, her personal life wasn’t actually doing pretty well. Fryer and her now ex-husband reached an amicable divorce agreement in 1990.
Last but not least, she thought she owed him a debt of gratitude for giving her the ability to retrieve the latest news tips and power brokers of the day. She claims they have remained the best of friends and that she is a shareholder in his oil company.

Shara Fryer is a seasoned journalist and broadcaster whose journey began in television in Austin, moved to San Antonio, and eventually ended up in Houston, where she spent 27 years as the top television female news anchor at abc13 KTRK.
She garnered a variety of accolades and established her reputation as a skilled journalist by reporting on breaking events, political campaigns, and particularly hard-to-get interviews for her popular newsmaker profiles.
Fryer had brief but successful spells in ABC affiliates in Austin and San Antonio before landing the role at Houston’s KTRK-TV (Channel 13).
She started as a reporter before being given the opportunity to partner with Houston legend Dave Ward to host the 6 and 10 o’clock news.

Fryer is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the 90s. She continued to work despite undergoing radiation and chemotherapy every now and then.
Viewers couldn’t see the tubes and bottles of medication she carried around in a fanny pack or the connection to a port on her chest. Also, most of her co-workers were could not see them. Fryer says, “I didn’t want to be a baby or a victim.”
But she eventually had to accept that balancing work, chemotherapy, radiation, and drugs for pain, nausea, infections, and fatigue was too difficult.
Fast forward and Shara was declared cancer-free. She established a fund for cancer research in her name at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
