First and foremost, it is important to talk about her career beginnings. Tanya worked at her own private law practice for three years and this exposed her to the bigger picture of what was waiting ahead of her.
She gained enough experience to work for eleven years as a trial attorney and supervisor for the District of Columbia Public Defender Service. She later specialized in litigation and white-collar criminal defense at Boies, Schiller, & Flexner LLP.
Fast forward to the 2020s, Tanya has handled high-profile cases and when we say high-profile cases, we mean sensitive and big cases that involve immigration, abortion, sex offenses, and domestic violence.
One of the most famous cases that she has handled is the U.S. Capitol attack. The attack was so serious that five people ended up dying.
Not enough, there were also some destructions that were done in the Capitol. Chutkan sentenced rioters who took part in the 2021 attack on the Capitol to some of the worst punishments.
In December of 2021, she handed out the then-longest sentence of slightly more than five years to a guy from Florida who was accused of hurling a fire extinguisher at the responding officers during the incident.
