Moss was approached with two job proposals. One was to take over as pastor of the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, while the other was to relocate to Chicago and serve at Trinity United Church, a United Church of Christ (UCC) church led by Jeremiah Wright.
Actually, he was to be Wright’s replacement at the approximately 8,500-member megachurch. Moss claims that after praying and fasting, he sensed God’s call to move to Chicago, which he did in 2006, initially as Wright’s assistant. He assumed the role of regular preaching at Trinity on March 9, 2008, and was ordained as senior pastor in May 2009.
Moss was one of four more writers to Fuller Theological Seminary Professor Ralph C. Watkins’ book The Gospel Remix: Reaching the Hip Hop Generation, which was published in early 2007.
He was also one of several black preachers who spoke at the NAACP’s mock burial for the term “nigger” during that time, describing it as “the greatest child that racism ever birthed.” He III founded his ministry on community progress and campaigning for social justice.
As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Moss has spent the last twenty years living and preaching a Black theology that openly addresses issues of racial injustice, climate change, and economic disparity.
